ultra rare Rolex day date first serie ref 6612
This early Rolex Day-Date Ref. 6612 in 18k yellow gold is distinguished by its very rare smooth-bezel configuration. Rather than the fluted surround commonly associated with the Day-Date, a broad polished ring frames the dial, giving the watch a restrained appearance. The light dial displays a mottled cream and honey-toned patina, contrasted by applied gold faceted indexes and matching hands. The full weekday appears in English at 12, with the date beneath a Cyclops magnifier at 3. An olive-green leather strap complements the warm tones of the case and dial.
The Day-Date made its debut in 1956, combining a date display with the weekday written in full. Reserved for precious metals, it established a distinctive place within the Oyster collection. The Ref. 6612 belongs to the formative generations of this model and is the smooth-bezel counterpart to the better-known Ref. 6611. Its identity therefore rests on a specific reference configuration, not simply on an alternative visual treatment of a conventional fluted-bezel watch. The 36 mm case retains the proportions that would become central to the classic Day-Date.
Mechanically, the 66xx generation is associated with the Rolex 1055 family of automatic chronometer movements. On this example, the Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified inscription sits beneath the hands, while the upper dial carries the early Oyster-Perpetual and Day-Date signatures. The faceted markers bring highlights to the aged surface without overwhelming its texture. Seen together, the smooth bezel and pointed hour markers give the watch a markedly different character from later Day-Dates with fluted bezels and straight baton indexes. Its collector interest lies in this combination of an uncommon early reference, precious-metal construction, and a dial whose visible patina forms part of its present appearance. The leather strap also leaves the case silhouette and curved lugs clearly visible.
