Rolex Day date ref 1802, rare dial " visone" , oyster bracelet
This Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date Ref. 1802 from 1974 presents a more restrained expression of the classic yellow-gold Day-Date. Its defining feature is the smooth 18k yellow-gold bezel, a clean alternative to the fluted bezel most closely associated with the family. The rare mink-toned visone dial adds a soft, distinctive contrast to the warm gold case. The uninterrupted line of the bezel gives the 36 mm Oyster case a quieter and more architectural profile, reinforced by the original yellow-gold Oyster bracelet. Together, the smooth bezel and three-link bracelet lend this Day-Date an uncommon balance between formal refinement and the purposeful character of a Rolex sports bracelet.
The Day-Date was introduced in 1956 as the first wristwatch to present both the date and the day of the week spelled out in full. Rolex reserved it from the outset for precious metals, and the four-digit references of the 1960s and 1970s established the visual vocabulary of the vintage Day-Date. The Ref. 1802 belongs to this important generation and shares its 36 mm case, acrylic crystal, and pie-pan dial architecture with the wider 1800 family. Its smooth bezel, however, clearly separates it from the more familiar fluted-bezel Ref. 1803.
The original Oyster bracelet is central to the configuration of this particular watch. While the President bracelet became the emblematic pairing for the Day-Date, Rolex also supplied period watches with the solid-gold Oyster bracelet. Its broad, flat three-link construction carries a different visual weight: more direct, more linear, and particularly harmonious with the polished smooth bezel. Inside, the Calibre 1556 represents the later high-beat Day-Date movement, with a 19,800-vph frequency, 26 jewels, and traditional non-quickset calendar setting. The day and date advance by moving the hands through midnight. The rare visone dial, yellow-gold case, smooth bezel, and original Oyster bracelet make this 1974 Ref. 1802 a distinctive and quietly individual version of the vintage Day-Date.
