Cartier Dual time Tonneau in white gold, full set, number 001

The Cartier Tonneau Dual Time Ref. 2459 C is a rare expression of Cartier mechanical design from the late 1990s. Its curved 18k white-gold Tonneau case contains two entirely independent hand-wound time displays, each with its own crown, movement, and set of blued steel hands. The silvered guilloché dial is divided vertically into two elegant zones, both with black Roman numerals and concentric engine-turned decoration. A black leather strap complements the sculptural case, whose curved form follows the wrist with the fluidity that defines the Tonneau line. The ingenuity of this Tonneau Dual Time lies in the decision not to use a conventional GMT mechanism. Cartier fitted two separate movements into one curved case, each wound and set through its own sapphire-cabochon crown. The upper and lower indications can therefore be set to any two locations without being constrained by whole-hour increments. This is especially practical for time zones offset by thirty or forty-five minutes. The two dials are not merely decorative: they are autonomous mechanical instruments presented as a single Cartier composition.

Ref. 2459 represents a late twentieth-century revival of the historic Tonneau form, a Cartier case design first introduced in 1906. The long, rounded profile is both architectural and ergonomic, while the complete guilloché treatment gives the dial a finely engraved character unusual for a dual-time watch. The restrained palette of white gold, silver, black, and blue steel lets the unusual twin-display layout remain the focus. Its original Cartier box and warranty accompany a particularly distinctive individual example: a numbered series watch carrying No. 001 AF, with the number visibly engraved on the caseback.
